Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method

What is Face Yoga?

A natural way of looking and feeling younger and healthier with the added sense of relaxation and wellbeing. It combines face exercises, face massage, face acupressure and face relaxation with wellbeing techniques for the mind body and soul.

Many techniques are rooted in Eastern philosophies and practices which have been used for thousands of years, but equally, the Method is very much based on modern research and techniques which look at the science of the face, how it is composed and how it should be treated.

You will be taught how to use your own hands to help your face look and feel great with simple techniques to help your mind feel amazing too. Real tools for life.

Who is it for?

The Danielle Collins Face yoga Method can be used as a preventative measure for clients from 18 years upwards. The earlier a client start the exercises the less likely they are to see the signs of ageing and tension in the face. It can be adapted according to medical issues or skin conditions.

It is never too late to strengthen a muscle, to improve skin tone or boost your circulation. It’s never too late to reduce stress and tension in the face, to improve lymphatic drainage or to enhance health. Additionally all ages can benefit from relaxing the mind and body through wellbeing techniques.

The Palsy Association and the Stroke Association now recommend face exercise for rehabilitation purposes. This is to help regain strength, symmetry and improve blood flow to the skin and muscles. If you wish to use Face Yoga for rehabilitation purposes, please check with your Doctor first.

What can cause the face to age?

Weakening of the face muscles + Poor lymph flow + Breakdown of connective tissue + Stress + Losing collagen & elastin + Poor circulation + Excess toxins + Too much sun + Harsh winds & cold + Certain products + Poor nutrition + Negativity + Pollution + Cigarettes, alcohol & drugs + Lack of sleep + Lack of exercise.

What do you do in Face Yoga?

Face Exercise: Just as your body needs regular exercise to stay toned and firm, the 57 muscles in the face and neck also need to be exercised. As they strengthen they are lifted and firmed and the skin attached to the muscles is also lifted and tautened, therefore reducing lines and wrinkles.

Face Massage: Regular face massage will increase circulation, lymph flow and remove toxins. This will reduce poor skin tone, puffiness and dark circles allowing the skin to look healthier and more youthful. The massage techniques will also increase the collagen and elastin, the natural plumping agents which will mean a firmer and healthier complexion.

Acupressure: Pressing on certain points on the face can increase the flow of subtle energy or prana. This therefore reduces tension, increases circulation and gives a healthy glow to the skin.

Relaxation: Relaxing tension in the face this will help to reduce and prevent the deep set lines and wrinkles caused by stress, squinting and grimacing. Managing to relax the face correctly can give it a more open, youthful look.

Wellbeing: Taking time for wellbeing will do wonders for your overall happiness and health. Taking time to relax, do something for you, knowing you will look and feel better as a result may mean you may also feel calmer and more energised as well as looking younger and healthier. What happens on the inside, radiates out.

How does it affect my skin?

All exercises work the hypodermis or the lower level of the skin (the muscles & fatty tissue), the dermis or mid layer (connective tissue) and the epidermis or the upper layer of cells. If done correctly through guidance from your instructor, it will increase the blood circulation, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach the cells of the upper skin. The result is a clear, healthy complexion with a beautiful glow which has less toxins and a better ability to absorb moisture.

The massage techniques are designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the middle layer of the skin giving you smoother, more supple, tighter-looking skin.

How long does it take to see results?

The results vary from person to person as everyone has different faces, skin types, ages and lifestyles. Most of the time you will feel a difference straight away as your muscles will have had a good work out. You should see and feel less tension in the face and the skin may have a rosy glow due to the improved circulation.

As a general rule you should start to see more of a long term improvement in the face and neck after 2 weeks. After 2-4 months, there should be noticeably less fine lines, less tension and look healthier and more energised. Within 6-9 months most people report that they look and feel many years younger and feel more relaxed with themselves.

Most importantly EVERYONE gets results by doing it every day. The consistency of practice plays the biggest role in seeing smoother, firmer healthier face.

When and how often should I do it?

Once a day, 6 days a week is recommended. Morning, afternoon or evening work fine, just find a regular slot for some ‘you’ time.

Join in the classes to gain exercises to try at home or book into get a one to one personally tailored routine.

Can it be done after invasive procedures?

If you have had any face, head or neck surgery then please check with your Doctor before proceeding with Face Yoga. Generally there will be a time period post cosmetic surgery where you must allow your surgery to heal, so always double check with the Doctor to be safe. If you have had a face lift, Face Yoga may reduce the need or frequency for further operations, maintain results of the lift for longer and promote feelings of wellbeing and positivity.

If you have had Botox or Fillers, please check with your Doctor or practitioner on how long you must wait before exercising or massaging. It depends on location and amount used.

Should I moisturise before or after a Face Yoga session?

It is recommended to use a good daily moisturiser after the exercises and acupressure but before the massage and relaxation. If you would like some help in choosing a suitable product Lindsay is an Independent Consultant for Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic products. You can view her website here

Safety aspects to think about…

To join any Face Yoga Class or One to One session you will have to fill in a Consultation Form to ensure client safety and how best to tailor the sessions. If you feel you have any particular needs, health issues or if any of the exercises feel uncomfortable for you then please consult your Doctor before using the programme. Always work to your own comfort levels and ensure you have clean hands.

Evidence that Face Yoga works

You can see from the picture, that in just two months, I made a difference in my sagging/double chin area. This was done through self practice 6 days a week.

On a more scientific level, a 30 minute facial exercise routine was completed for 20 weeks by participants through the Northwestern University in the USA. The team of skin and medical professionals reported that it showed an almost 3 year age decrease in the 20 weeks.

Additionally senior study author Emily Poon, an assistant research professor in dermatology at Feinberg talks about the facial fat loss and atrophy which happens with ageing and said “If muscles underneath become bigger, the skin has more stuffing underneath it and the firmer the muscle appears to make the shape of the face more full. Muscle growth is increasing the facial volume and counteracting the effects of age-related fat thinning and skin loosening.”

As mentioned earlier The Palsy Association and the Stroke Association now recommend face exercise for rehabilitation purposes.
